Bernard Hill, known for his roles in “The Lord of the Rings” and “Titanic,” has passed away at the age of 79, Associated Press reports.
He portrayed Théoden, King of Rohan, in the “Lord of the Rings” trilogy and is remembered for delivering a memorable battle cry before leading his troops into battle in the final movie, which won 11 Oscars. Hill also played Captain Edward Smith in “Titanic,” one of the only characters based on a real person, who retreated to the wheelhouse, ultimately going down with the vessel. The movie received 11 Academy Awards.
Hill’s passing coincided with the airing of the second series of the BBC drama “The Responder,” in which he played the father of the show’s star Martin Freeman. BBC Drama director Lindsay Salt praised Hill’s remarkable talent and iconic roles, expressing condolences to his loved ones.
