Marvel’s New ‘Avengers’ Films Will Star Robert Downey Jr. as a Villain

Marvel Studios made a return to San Diego Comic-Con with major announcements, including news about upcoming “Avengers” films and surprise guest appearances of Harrison Ford and Robert Downey Jr., known for his role as Iron Man, will return to Marvel as the villain Doctor Doom, AP News reports.

The panel revealed that the next “Avengers” films will be titled “Avengers: Secret Wars” and “Avengers: Doomsday,” with “Doomsday” scheduled for release in 2026. All the actors introduced during the panel will appear in these films, directed by Joe and Anthony Russo, who expressed excitement about returning to the Marvel universe after their previous successes, including “Avengers: Endgame.”

Harrison Ford was introduced as playing President Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross, who transforms into the Red Hulk. Ford expressed his enthusiasm about joining the Marvel Universe. The cast of “Thunderbolts,” including Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Florence Pugh, Sebastian Stan, and David Harbour, also shared a short clip from their film, slated for release in May 2025.

The panel also revealed new details about “Captain America: Brave New World,” featuring Giancarlo Esposito as the villain Sidewinder. The panel concluded with news about “The Fantastic Four,” starring Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Joseph Quinn, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach, which will begin filming soon and is scheduled for release in July 2025.
