- A massive landslide struck the village of Tarasin in the Marra Mountains, located in the Darfur region in western Sudan, on Sunday after several days of heavy rainfall.
- The landslide completely destroyed the village, leaving over 1,000 people dead and only one survivor reported. The area was leveled to the ground, making recovery operations extremely difficult.
- The Sudan Liberation Movement/Army (SLM/A), which controls the area, has appealed to the U.N. and aid agencies to help recover bodies and provide relief.
- The disaster comes amid Sudan’s ongoing civil war between the Sudanese army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), which has been ongoing since April 2023.
- The conflict has already killed over 40,000 people, displaced 14 million, and left millions facing famine-level hunger.
