The war in Sudan, ongoing for over 16 months, has resulted in more than 20,000 deaths, according to the Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO) Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, AP News reports.
The conflict, which began in April last year between the military and the Rapid Support Forces, has devastated the country, turning cities into battlefields, severely impacting civilian infrastructure and disrupting the healthcare system. The fighting has displaced more than 13 million people, with over 2.3 million fleeing to neighboring countries.
The conflict has been marked by war crimes and atrocities, including mass rape and ethnic killings. Recent seasonal floods and a cholera outbreak have further worsened the situation. Tedros has called for an immediate cease-fire and greater international intervention to address the humanitarian disaster.
