Kurdish Militant Group PKK Disbands in Turkey

The Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) has announced its decision to disband and end its armed struggle against Turkey, concluding a four-decade insurgency that has claimed over 40,000 lives.

The announcement came after a congress convened by the PKK in northern Iraq, where it declared the dissolution of its organizational structure and the cessation of all military operations. This development comes after a call from PKK leader Abdullah Öcalan, who has been imprisoned since 1999, urging the group to shift away from armed resistance in favor of a peaceful resolution.

The Turkish government has welcomed the decision, seeing it as a significant step toward a “terror-free” Turkey and a potential opportunity for peace in the region. However, challenges remain regarding the logistics of disarmament, the fate of PKK fighters, and the ongoing conflict involving Kurdish militias in Syria, who have ties to the PKK.
