Turkey Detains 1,100 Protesters After Erdogan Rival Arrested

The arrest of Istanbul Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s main political rival, has sparked nationwide protests, with over 1,100 people detained and several journalists arrested. Imamoglu, a potential challenger to Erdogan in the 2028 presidential election, was detained on corruption charges that he denies.

Protests have erupted across Turkey, with demonstrations in more than 55 provinces, with clashes between demonstrators and riot police, leading to 1,133 arrests, including several journalists covering the unrest. Police have used water cannons, tear gas, and plastic pellets to disperse crowds. The government has defended the arrests, stating that they are necessary to maintain public order. Turkey’s authorities have also sought to block over 700 online accounts, including news outlets and political figures, adding to concerns over freedom of expression and political dissent.

The opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP) has denounced Imamoglu’s arrest as politically motivated and undemocratic, calling for continued protests until his release. Meanwhile, the government has dismissed accusations of political interference, asserting that the judicial system operates independently.
