Tensions between China and the Philippines have escalated after both nations defended their territorial claim over the disputed Sandy Cay in the South China Sea.
The latest dispute erupted after Chinese state media reported that the Chinese coast guard had landed on the reef and raised the Chinese flag as part of “maritime control” operations, suggesting China’s sovereignty over the disputed area. The Philippines firmly rejected the claim and quickly staged its own symbolic show of sovereignty, sending its coast guard to Sandy Cay and raising the Philippine flag on the sandbars.
Despite the ongoing tensions, there is no evidence to suggest that China has built permanent structures or established military outposts on the sandbars. The region remains a strategic and highly contested area, with the Philippines maintaining a military presence on nearby Thitu Island, and China having constructed military facilities on other features in the Spratlys.
