Hong Kong Apartment Complex Fire Death Toll Reaches 159
China
The death toll from the Hong Kong high-rise apartment fire has risen to 159, making it the city’s deadliest blaze in decades.
Authorities have identified 140 of the victims, ranging from a 1-year-old infant to a 97-year-old, while 19 remain unidentified.
Around 30–31 people remain missing, including many foreign domestic workers from Indonesia and the Philippines.
Police have arrested between 15 and 21 people on allegations including manslaughter, negligence, disabling alarms during maintenance, and possible corruption.
The fire occurred at Wang Fuk Court in Tai Po during a large-scale renovation project involving bamboo scaffolding, plastic mesh and foam boards that authorities say helped the flames spread rapidly.
