Ukraine’s Zelensky Says 2 Chinese Nationals Captured Fighting for Russia

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced on Tuesday that Ukrainian forces had captured two Chinese citizens who were fighting alongside Russian troops in the eastern Donetsk region. This marks the first reported instance of Chinese nationals directly involved in the conflict, despite China’s official stance of neutrality.

Zelensky revealed that the Ukrainian military had recovered personal documents, bank cards, and other information from the prisoners confirming their identities. Zelensky claimed to have evidence that more Chinese citizens were involved in the conflict and instructed Ukraine’s Foreign Minister to contact Beijing for an explanation. He noted that this development could damage China’s credibility as a neutral party and peace advocate.

China, which has maintained a diplomatic partnership with Russia throughout the conflict, has denied the allegations, calling Zelensky’s claims “groundless.” Beijing reaffirmed its position that Chinese citizens should avoid conflict zones and refrain from participating in military actions. The situation raises growing concerns about the role of foreign fighters in the conflict, with reports of North Korea already supplying troops and weapons to Russia.
