European leaders held emergency talks in Paris and insisted on having a role in negotiations to end the war in Ukraine. However, U.S. officials dismissed Europe’s role in the peace talks, arguing that a small group of negotiators would be more efficient.
The talks, lasting for three hours, left European leaders divided on sending peacekeeping troops to Ukraine after a peace deal. While U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer, was open to sending troops if a peace agreement is reached, countries like Poland were reluctant to deploy military forces to Ukraine. Europe remains focused on bolstering its defense capabilities, with Poland leading the charge in defense spending.
Despite these tensions, European leaders, including German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, insisted that any peace deal must involve Ukraine and the EU. French President Macron and other leaders emphasized the need for strong security guarantees for Ukraine.
