Trump Announces 10% Tariffs on Europe Over Greenland Dispute

U.S. President Donald Trump threatened escalating tariffs on eight European countries unless the United States is allowed to purchase Greenland.
The proposed tariffs would start at 10% on February 1 and rise to as much as 25% by June. Targeted countries include Denmark, Sweden, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Finland, the UK and Norway.
The EU convened for emergency talks, warned the tariffs risk a “dangerous downward spiral” and signaled readiness to retaliate, including reciprocal tariffs and broader anti-coercion measures.
European leaders stressed solidarity with Denmark and Greenland, reaffirming sovereignty and rejecting any U.S. takeover, by force or purchase.
Trump framed Greenland as vital to U.S. security due to its strategic Arctic location and resources, while Europe argued security concerns should be handled within NATO.
