At least 35 people were killed and 43 others injured when a driver rammed his car into a group of people exercising outside a sports center in the southern Chinese city of Zhuhai, DW News reports.
The 62-year-old driver, identified only by his last name Fan, drove his SUV through the gate of the sports center and rammed into people on the internal roads. Police found him attempting to harm himself with a knife and promptly stopped him, before sending him to the hospital. Fan, who suffered self-inflicted injuries to his neck and other parts of his body, is currently in a coma and unable to undergo interrogation. The motive for the attack is unclear, and authorities are investigating.
Chinese President Xi Jinping has ordered local authorities to provide assistance to affected residents and ensure the perpetrator is punished according to the law. Footage of the incident circulated briefly on social media but was quickly censored. The incident coincides with Zhuhai’s annual Airshow China event, which draws international attendees, including Russian officials.
