Two attackers carried out a terrorist attack at the Turkish Aerospace Industries (TUSAS) headquarters near Ankara, killing five people and injuring 22, including two in critical condition, Reuters reports.
Both assailants were killed during the attack, which included reports of gunfire and an explosion, by security forces. Turkish Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya suggested that the perpetrators were likely members of the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK). An investigation into the attack has been launched.
Turkish air forces conducted retaliatory airstrikes against 32 PKK targets in northern Iraq and Syria, destroying 32 locations in response to the attack. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, currently attending a BRICS conference in Russia, condemned the assault and received condolences from Russian President Vladimir Putin. NATO, the US, and the EU also condemned the incident. NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte expressed solidarity with Turkey following the attack.
TUSAS is Turkey’s largest aerospace manufacturer, developing military and civilian aircraft, including the KAAN fighter jet, and employs over 10,000 people.
