Kai-Fu Lee, former head of Google China, has said that Chinese AI models lag behind US models by six to nine months, but predicts that Chinese AI applications will become widespread more quickly than those in the US, CNBC reports.
Lee, founder of 01.AI and Sinovation Ventures, expects China to lead in AI app development by early next year, due to the significantly reduced cost of training AI models. Lee also suggested that it might take five to eight years to achieve a breakthrough in generative AI consumer applications and develop a “super app” capable of performing multiple tasks, potentially requiring new devices beyond current smartphones.
Chinese tech giants like Alibaba and Tencent have already launched AI models, while startups like ShengShu Technology are developing advanced AI tools for commercial use.
