Super Typhoon Yagi Hits Vietnam After Killing Two in China’s Hainan

Super Typhoon Yagi, the most powerful storm in Asia this year, made landfall in northern Vietnam after causing significant damage in China’s Hainan Island, killing two people and injuring dozens, Reuters reports.

The typhoon, which was responsible for at least 16 deaths in the Philippines, hit Vietnam with winds of up to 160 kph (99 mph), down from its peak of 234 kph (145 mph) in Hainan. The storm hit Haiphong, causing power outages, broken windows, and significant damage. Vietnam had earlier evacuated nearly 50,000 people from coastal areas and deployed 450,000 military personnel for relief efforts. Authorities suspended operations at four major airports, canceling over 300 flights, and schools were closed in 12 northern provinces, including Hanoi.

In Hainan, Yagi had caused widespread damage, knocking down trees, flooding roads, and affecting over 800,000 homes. Scientists attribute the increasing strength of typhoons to climate change, with recent events like Typhoon Shanshan in Japan highlighting this trend.
