Typhoon Yagi has made landfall on Hainan Island in China, bringing winds up to 245 kph (152 mph) and heavy rain, leading to the evacuation of about one million people in Hainan and Guangdong provinces, AP News reports.
The storm has caused power outages, flooding, and the suspension of classes, work, and transportation in affected areas. In Hong Kong, Yagi prompted the highest No. 8 typhoon warning signal, leading to the suspension of trading, bank services, schools, and over 100 flights were canceled. Yagi, the strongest autumn typhoon to hit China, is expected to make a second landfall in Guangdong and continue toward northern Vietnam.
Earlier, Typhoon Yagi caused widespread damage in the Philippines, where it left at least 16 dead, 17 missing, and displaced over 47,600 people due to landslides and flooding.
