A fire at Hillside Endarasha Academy in Nyeri, central Kenya, claimed the lives of 17 boys who were sleeping in their dormitory and injured 14 others, Reuters reports.
The fire occurred in a dormitory housing 156 students in grades 4 to 8, ages 9 to 13. The victims were reportedly burned beyond recognition. Authorities are investigating the cause of the fire and the school, which has a total of 824 students, has been cordoned off for investigation. Government officials, including Interior Minister Kithure Kindiki and President William Ruto, have promised accountability for those responsible.
