A 41-year-old man was arrested in Essen, Germany, after allegedly setting two fires in residential buildings, injuring 30 people, including eight children, two of whom are in life-threatening condition from inhaling smoke, AP News reports.
The suspect, a Syrian citizen, also drove a van into two shops, causing property damage but no injuries, and threatened people with weapons but was subdued by bystanders using shovels and poles until police arrived. Authorities believe the man’s motive was related to his wife leaving him, as he targeted locations associated with people who supported her. The suspect, known to police for previous threats and property damage, is being held on suspicion of arson and attempted murder.
