Canada’s Lucara Diamond Corp has discovered a 2,492-carat diamond at its Karowe mine in Botswana, making it one of the largest rough diamonds ever found, Reuters reports.
This diamond ranks as the second largest discovered, following the 3,106-carat Cullinan Diamond from South Africa. Lucara has not yet disclosed the gem’s quality. The Karowe Mine is renowned for producing large diamonds, including the 1,758-carat Sewelô and the 1,109-carat Lesedi La Rona. The diamond will be presented to Botswana’s President Mokgweetsi Masisi.
Botswana, the leading global diamond producer by value, is considering a new law requiring mining companies to offer a 24% stake in their mines to local investors.
