A mudslide triggered by heavy rains from typhoon Gaemi hit a homestay in southeastern China’s Hunan province, killing at least 12 people and injuring six, AP News reports.
The rains, which recorded 30 centimeters of rain over 24 hours, triggered the mudslide, which trapped 21 people in Yuelin village, six were rescued, while three are unaccounted for. In Shanghai, a delivery person died after being struck by a falling tree, likely due to storm-related winds. In Jilin province, residents were advised to move to higher ground as the Yalu River rose above warning levels, and in Liaoning province, 30,000 people were evacuated and operations of chemical and mining companies were suspended.
The typhoon had previously wreaked havoc in the Philippines, killing at least 34 people, and Taiwan, where the death toll rose to 10. In Taiwan, the storm caused significant agricultural damage and disruptions, including sinking a cargo ship and stranding other vessels.
