Ukraine’s Energy Ministry announced plans to import a record amount of electricity from five European countries due to significant damage to its energy infrastructure from Russian strikes, Reuters reports.
The imports, expected to reach 19,484 megawatt hours, will surpass the previous record set after the first wave of Russian attacks in March. Ukrainian power plants have suffered extensive damage, leading to an electricity shortage and prompting the need for imports from Romania, Slovakia, Poland, Hungary, and Moldova. Emergency assistance from the EU has been provided, but power curbs for industrial consumers are anticipated.
The recent attacks on Ukrainian energy infrastructure have caused over $1 billion in damages, primarily affecting thermal and hydropower facilities and power transmission systems. As a result, Ukraine is increasingly reliant on its nuclear power plants for electricity generation.
