Flash floods caused by heavy seasonal rains in Afghanistan have resulted in the deaths of more than 300 people and the destruction of over 1,000 houses, according to the UN World Food Program, Associated Press reports.
The Taliban government’s spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid reported hundreds dead and many injured in provinces like Badakhshan, Baghlan, Ghor, and Herat. The floods have caused extensive devastation and significant financial losses, prompting the government to mobilize resources for rescue and recovery efforts. The Taliban Defense Ministry reported that the country’s air force has begun evacuating people and rescuing those stranded in flooded areas.
The floods come after Afghanistan experienced a series of earthquakes and severe flooding earlier in the year, resulting in loss of life and destruction of infrastructure. International organizations like the International Rescue Committee (IRC) are preparing to scale up emergency response efforts in affected areas.
