Apple has removed Meta’s WhatsApp and Threads from its App Store in China following an order from the Chinese government, citing national security concerns, Reuters reports.
However, other Meta apps such as Facebook, Instagram, and Messenger remain available. Apple stated its obligation to follow local laws despite disagreement. It is unclear why WhatsApp and Threads raised security concerns. Meta declined to comment.
Chinese consumers can still access the apps through Apple’s App Stores in other countries. Apple has previously removed apps from its China store, including The New York Times news app and ChatGPT-like apps due to regulatory issues.
