Elon Musk announced that his AI startup xAI will make its ChatGPT challenger “Grok” open-source this week, following his recent lawsuit against OpenAI for deviating from its original nonprofit mission, Reuters reports.
Musk criticized the trend of big tech companies, like Google, prioritizing profit over ethical AI development. The move aligns xAI with other firms like Meta and France’s Mistral, which have open-sourced AI models. While open-sourcing can accelerate innovation, concerns have been raised about its potential misuse, prompting Musk to advocate for the establishment of a “third-party referee” to oversee AI development.
xAI was launched as an alternative to OpenAI and Google, focusing on “maximum truth-seeking AI.” Musk, who co-founded OpenAI in 2015 but left in 2018, has expressed support for open-source AI and criticized OpenAI’s shift from a nonprofit to a profit-driven model.
