Tech billionaire Elon Musk has expressed regret for some of his recent social media posts about U.S. President Donald Trump, signaling a possible easing of their public dispute. Musk wrote on his platform X that his posts from the previous week had “gone too far,” amid escalating tensions that threatened both his political influence and the future of his businesses.
The fallout began after Musk criticized Trump’s tax and spending bill, calling it an “abomination” that would increase the U.S. budget deficit. Musk, who spent nearly $300 million backing Trump’s 2024 campaign, was appointed to lead the Department of Government Efficiency, tasked with downsizing federal operations, and saw the bill as undermining government efficiency efforts.
Trump responded with hostility, threatening to cut government contracts to Musk’s companies, such as Tesla and SpaceX, which rely heavily on such support. Musk later deleted some posts that intensified the conflict, including suggestions of Trump’s association with Jeffrey Epstein and support for Trump’s impeachment. Analysts suggest Musk’s conciliatory tone may reflect a strategic effort to protect his business interests from political fallout.
