Massive forest fires in central Chile have led to extended curfews in heavily affected cities, with at least 112 reported deaths and 200 people reported missing, Associated Press reports.
The city of Viña del Mar, a popular beach resort, witnessed intense fires that left 1,600 people without homes and destroyed a famous botanical garden. Chilean President Gabriel Boric visited affected areas and declared two days of national mourning. Curfews were imposed to prevent looting.
Authorities suspect intentional causes for some fires, as they ignited simultaneously in four points. Unusually high temperatures, low humidity, and strong winds hampered firefighting efforts, burning through 8,000 hectares.
