Google CEO Sundar Pichai has informed employees in an internal memo that the company has laid off over a thousand employees since January 10th and indicated that more cuts are expected, The Verge reports.
Pichai informed staff that the company has ambitious goals and needs to make tough choices to create capacity for investment. The layoffs and reorganizations have affected teams in hardware, ad sales, search, shopping, maps, policy, core engineering, and YouTube.
Pichai emphasized that the role eliminations are not at the scale of last year’s reductions, he stated that the layoffs this year aim to simplify execution and drive velocity in certain areas. Last year, Google cut 12,000 jobs.
