Myanmar’s military has reached a cease-fire agreement with the Three Brotherhood Alliance, an alliance of ethnic minority guerrilla groups in the country’s northeast, Associated Press reports.
The deal, brokered by China in Kunming, involves an immediate cease-fire, the disengagement of military personnel, and settling disputes through negotiations. Both sides commit not to undermine the safety of Chinese people in the border area and Chinese projects in Myanmar.
The cease-fire covers northern Shan state, near the China border, with the military halting aerial bombing and artillery shelling, and the alliance ceasing its offensive. The agreement does not apply to fighting in other regions of Myanmar.
The ongoing violence in Myanmar began after the military ousted the elected government in February 2021. The Three Brotherhood Alliance launched an offensive in October 2022, posing a significant challenge to Myanmar’s military rule.
