Egypt’s El-Sissi Wins Presidential Election with 89.6% of Vote

Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sissi has been reelected for a third term with a landslide victory, securing 89.6% of the vote, according to the National Election Authority, Associated Press reports.

El-Sissi’s victory was widely anticipated as he faced three relatively unknown opponents. The election, which saw a record-high voter turnout of 66.8%, occurred amidst the Israel-Hamas war and an economic crisis in Egypt, with inflation surpassing 30% and the Egyptian pound losing 50% of its value against the dollar in the past 22 months.

El-Sissi, who has faced international criticism for human rights abuses and a harsh crackdown on dissent, vowed to address the economic challenges without providing specific details. Under his leadership, thousands of government critics, including Islamists and opposition figures, have been silenced or jailed.
