On Sunday, the UN member states reached an agreement to protect the world’s oceans following 10 years of negotiations, reports BBC.
The agreement will put 30% of the world’s oceans under protected status by 2030. The marine ecosystems will be preserved through restrictions on fishing and deep-sea mining.
The last global agreement to protect the oceans, the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea, was signed 40 years ago in 1982.
