UN Votes Overwhelmingly to Condemn US Embargo of Cuba

The UN General Assembly has voted overwhelmingly to condemn the US embargo on Cuba, marking 30th time the UN has rebuked the decades-old US policy.

On Thursday, 185 countries voted in favour of a non-binding resolution condemning the embargo, with the US and Israel voting against, while Brazil and Ukraine abstained.

Former US President Barack Obama attempted to ease tensions with Cuba, by formally restoring US-Cuba relations and visiting Havana in 2016.

However, former US President Donald Trump rolled back those efforts, while current President Joe Biden has not made any substantial attempt to deviate from Trump’s policies.

In 1960, the US imposed an embargo on Cuba, following Fidel Castro’s revolution which saw the nationalisation of properties belonging to US citizens and companies.
