The UN and EU has condemned Twitter’s recent decision to suspend some journalist’s accounts, due to its new doxxing policy.
“Media freedom is not a toy. A free press is the cornerstone of democratic societies and a key tool in the fight against harmful disinformation.”
– Melissa Fleming, UN’s Under Secretary General for Global Communications
On Wednesday, Twitter introduced its new doxxing policy, prohibiting users from sharing someone’s real-time location data.
The social media platform went on to suspend an account dedicated to tracking the location of Elon Musk’s private jet using publicly available flight data.
Journalists from the New York Times, CNN and the Washington Post also found their accounts suspended after reporting about the doxxing incident.
On Friday, the EU warned Twitter of sanctions in accordance with Europe’s Digital Services Act, to respect media freedom and fundamental rights.
