China’s daily Covid cases have reached the highest level since the pandemic began despite its zero-tolerance policy, according to the National Health Bureau.
China recorded 31,454 domestic cases, 27,517 without symptoms, a relatively small number when compared with China’s population of 1.4 billion.
But, the latest number exceed the country’s previous highest record of 29,390 infections in mid-April following Shanghai’s lockdown.
Beijing residents now require a negative PCR test result within 48 hours to gain access to public places like grocery stores, shopping malls and government buildings.
Almost a third of the latest Covid cases are found in the southern manufacturing hub of Guangzhou, which has built thousands of temporary hospital rooms.
