On Saturday, Turkey launched its first domestically-produced electric vehicle and the first cars are expected to be ready by March 2023.
The new SUV from Turkey’s Automobile Joint Venture Group (TOGG) will cost 900,000 Turkish lira (€50,000), which is a steep price for most people in the country.
The automaker plans to roll out between 17,000 to 18,000 electric cars next year, and aims to meet its maximum capacity of 175,000 annually within the next five years.
However, a concern is that the country lacks the necessary infrastructure like sufficient coverage of charging stations to support electric vehicles.
Critics of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and his party, the AKP, claim he is using TOGG to boost his chances of re-election next year.
