On Wednesday, the World Health Organization (WHO) said that COVID-19 remains a global emergency, almost three years after it was initially declared as one.
“Although the public perception is that the pandemic is over in some parts of the world, it remains a public health event that continues to adversely and strongly affect the health of the world’s population.”
– WHO Committee
In recent months, cases are falling in parts of the world. However, the UN-agency urged countries to stay vigilant and get their most vulnerable populations vaccinated.
Currently the number of weekly deaths is the lowest since the pandemic began, but the number of deaths are still higher than other viruses.
On Jan. 30, 2020, the WHO’s emergency committee first declared COVID-19 a global emergency.
