Russian Gas Returns to Europe as Nord Stream 1 Reopens

On Thursday, Nord Stream 1 gas pipeline reopened, after being closed for annual maintenance work for ten days.
Maintenance of Siemens-built turbines, essential for the pipeline to function,  is conducted at a plant in Canada.

Ottawa had initially blocked the return of one turbine because of sanctions. After pressure from Germany, Canada agreed to return the turbine.
Following the invasion of Ukraine, the West responded with sanctions against Moscow, Russia in return has reduced its gas deliveries to EU countries.

In May, energy giant Gazprom reduced gas exports through Nord Stream to 40% of normal capacity.
"Russia is using energy as a weapon and therefore, in any event, whether it's a partial major cut off of Russian gas or total cut off... Europe needs to be ready."

On Wednesday, the European Commission urged EU nations to cut their demand for natural gas by 15% for the coming winter months
