In 2021, the American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation suspects that more than 11 million Americans are experiencing long COVID.
Since then, the academy's dashboard has been updated every day, it currently estimates that figure to be 25 million.
The calculations assumes that 30% of COVID patients will develop lasting symptoms.
The rate is then applied to the 85 million confirmed cases.
However, this may be a major under count as many infections are not reported.
In February 2022, blood antibody tests suggest that 187 million Americans had gotten the virus.
Applying the same formula would result in 56 million long COVID patients, one in every six Americans.
