New Hong Kong Textbooks ‘Claim City Never Was a British Colony’

New Hong Kong textbooks will no longer teach students that the city was a former British colony.

The Chinese government don't recognize the treaties that ceded the island to Britain after the opium wars.
During the 19th and early 20th centuries, China faced a series of military defeats, forcing the nation to agree to the "Unequal Treaties."

The western colonial powers imposed one-sided terms, forcing China to cede land, pay reparations and open ports.

Hong Kong was ceded to Britain in 1841 and 1842, further territorial expansion in 1860, and finally signing a 99-year lease in 1898.
Chief executive Carrie Lam, said students need protection from being "poisoned" and fed "false and biased information".
