Russian Fighter Jets Violate NATO Member Estonia’s Airspace

Three Russian MiG-31 fighter jets violated Estonian airspace for 12 minutes on Friday near Vaindloo Island in the Gulf of Finland.
Italian Air Force F-35s, deployed under NATO’s Baltic Air Policing Mission, intercepted the planes. NATO denounced the action as “reckless” and proof of its ability to respond quickly.
Estonia summoned Russia’s chargé d’affaires to lodge a formal protest. Estonia will also invoke NATO Article 4 consultations, citing a threat to national security.
The incident comes just days after Russia and Belarus ended Zapad-2025 military exercises, which included nuclear strike rehearsals.
