Earthquake in Afghanistan Kills 800, Injures 2,500

  • A 6.0-magnitude earthquake struck eastern Afghanistan late Sunday near Jalalabad, close to the Pakistan border.
  • The quake was at a shallow depth of 8–10 km, making it highly destructive. Multiple aftershocks followed, including 4.5 and 5.2 magnitude quakes.
  • Death toll reported at 800 dead, with 2,500–2,800 injured, mostly in Kunar province, where at least three villages were completely razed. Nangarhar region also reported widespread destruction.
  • Taliban government mobilized rescue teams, medics, and the military, but remote mountainous areas remain hard to access. At least 40 military flights transported over 420 injured and deceased.
  • Pakistan expressed condolences and offered support. China signaled willingness to provide assistance. The UN pledged support, but no foreign government had yet provided direct aid.
