Ukraine has launched a series of drone strikes targeting multiple regions across Russia early Tuesday, with Moscow bearing the brunt of the assault just days before the country’s Victory Day celebrations.
The Russian Defense Ministry reported that over 100 Ukrainian drones were intercepted, targeting multiple regions of Russia, including Moscow, Voronezh, and Kursk, with at least 19 drones shot down on their approach to Moscow. The strikes forced a temporary shutdown of all four major airports in Moscow and impacted several other regional airports, including those in Volgograd and Nizhny Novgorod. Local authorities reported minor damage, but no casualties. However, two people were injured in the Kursk region when drones targeted an electrical substation, causing a power outage.
The attacks came as Russia prepares to celebrate the 80th anniversary of Victory Day on May 9, marking the Soviet Union’s victory over Nazi Germany in World War II. Russian President Vladimir Putin has declared a three-day ceasefire from May 8-10, but Ukraine dismissed the ceasefire offer, pushing for a longer 30-day truce, as proposed by the United States in March.
