Powerful Earthquake Hits Myanmar and Thailand

A 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck Myanmar on Friday, causing widespread destruction and loss of life across the country. The epicenter was near Mandalay, the country’s second-largest city, and was recorded at a shallow depth of 10 km (6.2 miles), intensifying its impact.

At least 144 people have been confirmed dead in Myanmar, with over 730 injured, according to state reports. The number is expected to rise as rescue workers continue to search through collapsed buildings and rubble. Reports indicate severe damage in Mandalay, Sagaing, and Pyinmanar, with entire structures reduced to ruins. A five-story building collapsed in front of eyewitnesses, and a 90-year-old bridge was destroyed.

The tremors were felt in neighboring Thailand, where a high-rise building under construction in Bangkok collapsed, killing at least nine people. Thai officials have warned of potential aftershocks, urging residents to remain cautious.
