Russian President Vladimir Putin indicated support for a U.S.-proposed 30-day ceasefire aimed at ending the ongoing conflict in Ukraine but emphasized that any truce must address the “root causes” of the conflict, which Moscow cites as the demilitarization of Ukraine and its neutrality.
Putin questioned the specifics of the ceasefire, raising concerns about ongoing military mobilization in Ukraine, the supply of weapons, and the future of Ukrainian forces in the contested Kursk region. His remarks suggest that Russia seeks firm guarantees that Ukraine will not use the ceasefire to regroup, rearm, or continue military operations.
Ukraine has already agreed to the proposal, but only under the condition that Russia follows through. However, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky expressed skepticism over Putin’s willingness to abide by the ceasefire terms.
