Starmer, alongside other European leaders, expressed strong support for Zelensky and pledged increased defense spending to convince Trump of their commitment to security. French President Emmanuel Macron suggested a one-month ceasefire for air and sea attacks, but not for ground combat.
This decision follows a tense meeting between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and U.S. President Donald Trump, which raised fears that the U.S. might reduce support for Ukraine. Zelensky reiterated that Ukraine would not cede territory to Russia and expressed hope to repair relations with Trump despite their public clash.
