At Least 28 Injured After Car Rams Into a Crowd in Germany

At least 28 people were injured after a car driven by a 24-year-old Afghan asylum seeker rammed into a crowd in Munich, Germany, on Thursday. The incident occurred near a demonstration by striking workers, ahead of the Munich Security Conference.

Police detained the driver, whose motive is still unclear. The suspect, previously known to police for minor offenses, had his asylum application rejected but had not been deported due to security concerns in Afghanistan.

The attack raised concerns over security ahead of Germany’s upcoming federal election, with immigration and safety issues dominating the campaign. German Chancellor Olaf Scholz condemned the attack and called for the suspect to be punished and deported. While conservative and far-right politicians pushed for stricter immigration policies.
