Russia has detained an Uzbek citizen who allegedly confessed to planting and detonating a bomb that killed Lieutenant General Igor Kirillov, head of Russia’s Nuclear, Biological, and Chemical Protection Troops, Reuters reports.
The bomb, hidden in an electric scooter, exploded outside Kirillov’s apartment, also killing his assistant. The detained suspect stated he acted on instructions from Ukraine’s SBU intelligence services, detailing how he acquired the scooter, used a surveillance camera to monitor the scene, planted the explosive device, and remotely detonated it. He claimed Ukraine offered him a $100,000 reward and residency in a European country for the hit. Russia is pursuing other suspects, and another individual has reportedly been detained.
The SBU claimed responsibility for the assassination, accusing Kirillov of using chemical weapons against Ukrainian forces, an allegation Russia denies.
