The European Commission has fined Meta Platforms €797.72 million ($840.24 million) for violating EU antitrust rules for tying its Facebook Marketplace ads service to its social network Facebook, Reuters reports.
The Commission stated that Meta imposed unfair conditions on competitors in the online classified ads market by bundling the two services. The fine follows a two-year investigation into Meta’s practices, which the Commission argues illegally forced users to engage with Marketplace. Meta disagrees, stating that users can choose whether to use the service.
Meta plans to appeal the decision but will comply in the meantime and work on addressing the issues raised. The fine could reach up to 10% of Meta’s global revenue if the decision stands.
