Ukrainian forces are resisting one of Russia’s most significant offensives since the beginning of the invasion, according to General Oleksandr Syrskyi, the commander of Ukraine’s armed forces, Reuters reports.
Russia has focused its efforts on the Donbas region, which has become the main battleground of the conflict, leading to intense battles and heavy casualties on both sides. Russian forces advanced rapidly in September, marking their fastest progress since March 2022, and have reportedly captured two settlements along the Donbas frontline and seized nearly 200 square kilometers of territory within a week. Analysts suggest the conflict is entering a particularly dangerous phase as Russian forces gain momentum, with North Korea reportedly sending troops to assist Russia.
Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is urging NATO countries to supply long-range missiles to Ukraine and allow Ukraine to strike within Russia. Ukraine is also preparing for a challenging winter as Russian airstrikes have reportedly destroyed about half its power infrastructure.
