North Korea has officially designated South Korea as a “hostile state” and amended its constitution to abandon unification as a national goal, Reuters reports.
North Korea’s state media KCNA reported that the military had destroyed sections of road and railways linked with South Korea as part of a “phased complete separation” from the South. This move comes after North Korean leader Kim Jong Un called for constitutional changes to formally recognize South Korea as a separate country and main enemy, accusing Seoul of colluding with the US to undermine his regime. North Korea’s Supreme People’s Assembly recently met to finalize these constitutional changes.
Tensions between the two countries have escalated, with both sides dismissing a 2018 agreement to ease military tensions. North Korea has accused the South of violating its airspace with drones and vowed retaliation, while South Korea’s military responded with warning shots after the North detonated explosives on roads and railways.
