South Korea’s Ex-President Yoon Suk Yeol Indicted for Abuse of Power

Former South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol has been indicted for abuse of authority, adding to his ongoing trial for insurrection following a failed attempt to impose martial law last December.

The new indictment follows Yoon’s ongoing trial for insurrection, stemming from his controversial declaration of martial law in December, which led to armed forces being deployed to South Korea’s parliament. The order was quickly overturned by lawmakers, and Yoon was impeached soon after, making him the second president in South Korean history to be removed from office. The Constitutional Court removed Yoon from office in April, stripping him of all presidential privileges. If convicted of insurrection, Yoon could face life imprisonment or the death penalty.

Additionally, Yoon is being investigated for bribery allegations involving his wife, Kim Keon-hee, and a shaman accused of accepting lavish gifts. Prosecutors raided Yoon’s private residence earlier this week as part of the investigation.
